How Long Does SEO Take? An Honest Answer With Real Numbers

By Provello Team20 September 2026

"How long until I am on page one?" is the first question every business owner asks about SEO, and it deserves a straight answer: usually three to six months before you see meaningful movement, and six to twelve before it changes your business. Here is why, and what affects it.

What we have actually seen

On one local SEO project for a Northern Ireland business, the first three months were almost flat. Month four brought the first real jump. It took seven months to reach eight times the starting visibility and fourteen months to reach 25 times.

On a brand new website for a professional services firm, the site went from under 30 Google impressions in its first quarter to more than 12,000 a quarter a year later. Again, the early months looked like nothing was happening.

The pattern is consistent: slow, slow, then faster.

Why it takes that long

  • Google has to find the changes. New and updated pages are crawled on Google's schedule, not yours.
  • Google has to trust them. It watches how pages perform for a small number of searches before showing them for more.
  • Your competitors are not standing still. If three other businesses in Belfast are also working on their SEO, the bar keeps moving.

What makes it faster

  • An established domain. A site that has existed for years with a decent history moves faster than a brand new one.
  • Low competition. "Emergency dentist Belfast" is a fight. A specialist trade in a smaller town can move in weeks.
  • Fixing a technical fault. If the site was being held back by something broken, such as blocked pages or a botched migration, fixing it can produce results quickly. See why a website does not show up on Google.

What makes it slower

  • A new domain with no history.
  • Thin content: a five-page website has very little for Google to rank.
  • Stopping and starting. SEO rewards consistency. Three months on, three months off, gets you nowhere.

How to tell if it is working before the phone rings

Watch Google Search Console, not your sales figures, in the early months. In order, you should see: more pages indexed, then impressions rising, then average position improving, then clicks, then enquiries. If impressions are climbing month on month, it is working, even if the phone has not rung yet.

A word on guarantees

Nobody can guarantee a number one ranking, because nobody controls Google. What a good SEO partner can do is show you the evidence every month in plain English. That is how we run our SEO service.
